AWO provides a wide range of classes that foster creativity and provides social opportunities that help remove barriers to learning and other risk factors that may jeopardize these individuals’ chances for success. Classes are held six days a week and are open to special needs students within the age groups for each class. In addition to classes and workshops, AWO presents an annual recital showcase, community performances and a "Broadway" production that allows students to perform in front of a live audience, showcasing their talents, creativity and abilities. AWO rehearses each production for 3 -5 months. The many hours of learning the choreography, the songs, and the dialogue, allow for creative expression, both individually and in a group setting, which in turn encourages exercise, promotes healthier living, and stimulates learning.
Arts such as dance and music are crucial for individuals with special needs because they provide powerful avenues for self-expression, emotional release, and communication. These creative outlets can help individuals express feelings and ideas in ways that words may not capture, offering a sense of accomplishment and personal fulfillment. Dance and music also promote physical coordination, sensory integration, and cognitive development, enhancing motor skills, memory, and focus. Additionally, engaging in artistic activities fosters social interaction, encourages teamwork, and builds confidence, all of which contribute to an individual's sense of belonging and well-being. For individuals with special needs, the arts can be transformative tools that support growth, development, and inclusion in both personal and social contexts.
AWO is a unique and inclusive program offering a diverse range of dance and music classes tailored to individuals with special needs. Its mission is to provide a welcoming and empowering environment where children and adults of all abilities can experience the joy of movement, self-expression, and connection through dance and music.
